The Pachyrhizus mosaic virus, designated scientifically as Potyvirus pachyrhizus, is a viral pathogen primarily affecting legume crops, including jicama (Pachyrhizus erosus). Belonging to the family Potyviridae, it is characterized by filamentous particles and relies on complex interactions with host cellular machinery to replicate and spread throughout the vascular system of the plant.
This disease causes significant economic loss by disrupting the plant's photosynthetic capacity and hindering the development of roots and tubers. While the host range is often specific, the presence of this virus can be devastating for commercial plantations, leading to reduced yield and poor market quality of the harvested crops.
Common symptoms of the infection are represented by a distinct mosaic pattern on leaves, manifesting as mottled light and dark green areas. Other clinical signs include leaf curling, crinkling, stunting of the entire plant, and occasionally vein clearing.
