Description
Papaya ringspot virus (PRSV) is a severe viral disease caused by a species of the Potyvirus genus. It is considered the most significant limiting factor in the commercial production of papaya worldwide, causing systemic infection that prevents healthy plant development and significantly reduces fruit production quality.
The virus has a wide host range, primarily affecting plants within the Caricaceae family, especially papaya. Additionally, various members of the Cucurbitaceae family, such as zucchini, pumpkins, and cucumbers, act as alternative hosts. These plants often serve as a continuous source of inoculum for neighboring papaya orchards.
Symptoms of PRSV infection are distinct and highly damaging. Infected plants typically display mosaic patterns on leaves, leaf distortion, and stunted growth. The most identifiable sign is the presence of ring-like spots and streaks on the fruit skin, often with a greasy appearance, which ruins the marketability of the product.
Transmission occurs predominantly through aphid vectors in a non-persistent manner. This means that aphids can pick up the virus from an infected plant in just a few seconds and transmit it to a healthy plant immediately. Furthermore, human activity, such as pruning or handling plants with contaminated tools, can spread the virus mechanically within a field.
Management strategies are focused on minimizing the spread, as no chemical cure exists for viral plant infections. Integrated pest management (IPM) is crucial, involving the exclusion of vector populations, the implementation of strict sanitation procedures to remove diseased plants as soon as they are spotted, and, where available, the use of virus-resistant plant varieties or transgenic strains.
