Passion fruit woodiness virus (PWV) is a significant plant pathogen classified within the Potyvirus genus. This virus causes systemic infections in various species of the Passiflora family, negatively impacting plant physiology and fruit yield. It is characterized by flexuous filamentous particles containing a single-stranded RNA genome.

The primary host for this virus is the passion fruit vine (Passiflora edulis). The disease is widely distributed in major passion fruit-growing regions around the world. In the absence of proper management, the virus can spread rapidly through a plantation, resulting in significant economic losses for commercial growers.

The characteristic symptoms of the disease include mosaic-like patterns on leaves, leaf distortion, and vein clearing. A defining feature that gives the virus its name is the condition of the fruit: affected fruits develop a woody, thick, and hard rind, while the pulp cavity becomes small or underdeveloped, rendering the fruit commercially unmarketable.

The virus is primarily transmitted by various species of aphids in a non-persistent, stylet-borne manner. Aphids acquire the virus during short feeding probes on infected plants and immediately transmit it to healthy ones. The disease spread is exacerbated in tropical climates where environmental conditions allow for continuous aphid breeding and host plant availability.
