Pepper mottle virus (Potyvirus peporesticulae) is a significant viral pathogen that affects various Solanaceous crops. As a member of the Potyvirus genus, it causes systemic infections that severely disrupt plant metabolic processes, often leading to stunted development and significantly reduced crop yields in commercial pepper production.
The primary host range includes both sweet and hot peppers. The virus is highly capable of exploiting the internal transport mechanisms of the plant, spreading from the site of infection to all parts of the organism, which makes the disease particularly difficult to manage once the initial symptoms appear in the field or greenhouse.
Clinical signs of infection typically manifest as a distinct mosaic pattern on the foliage, accompanied by yellow speckling and chlorotic spotting.
