Description

The Peruvian tomato virus (Potyvirus perulycopersici) is a viral pathogen belonging to the Potyvirus genus, known for causing systemic disease in Solanaceous crops. It poses a significant challenge to agricultural productivity, leading to reduced yields and inferior fruit quality in greenhouse and field-grown vegetables.

The primary host for this virus is the tomato plant (Solanum lycopersicum). However, it can also infect other members of the Solanaceae family, including peppers and certain weed species, which can act as permanent reservoirs for the virus between growing seasons.

Clinical signs of infection typically include leaf mottling, mosaic patterns, and curling or distortion of leaves. As the infection progresses, affected plants exhibit stunted growth and yellowing (chlorosis), which impairs photosynthesis and significantly limits the plant's ability to produce marketable fruits.

Transmission occurs through sap-sucking insect vectors, primarily aphids, which transmit the virus in a non-persistent manner. Furthermore, the virus is easily transmitted mechanically, making agricultural practices such as pruning, staking, and harvesting high-risk activities if tools are not properly sanitized between plants.

Management and prevention focus on an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. This includes the elimination of alternative weed hosts, the use of certified virus-free seeds or seedlings, and the application of rigorous sanitation protocols. Controlling aphid populations with appropriate insecticides or physical barriers like greenhouse netting is also critical to mitigate further spread.
