Description
Pathogen and disease type. The Bean common mosaic virus (BCMV), involving Potyvirus phaseoluteum, is a highly infectious pathogen causing systemic viral disease in leguminous plants. It is a persistent virus that spreads through both vertical transmission (via seeds) and horizontal transmission (via insect vectors like aphids), making it a significant challenge for stable crop production.
Susceptible crops. The primary host for this pathogen is the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). However, the virus has a relatively broad host range within the legume family, enabling it to persist in various secondary hosts, which acts as a reservoir for the disease in agricultural landscapes throughout the growing season.
Symptoms and signs. Typical symptoms include a mosaic pattern on the leaves, characterized by alternating light and dark green patches. Advanced stages of infection often reveal severe leaf curling, distortion of the foliage, stunted overall plant growth, and a significant reduction in pod set, which directly impacts the commercial value of the harvest.
Conditions of development and harmfulness. The infection is most aggressive under environmental conditions that favor high populations of aphid vectors. The harmfulness of this disease lies in the systemic disruption of plant physiology, which leads to flower abortion, poor seed development, and severe yield losses that can reach up to 50% under optimal infection conditions.
Protection and prevention measures. Managing BCMV requires an integrated management approach:
