Phytolacca mosaic virus (PhMV) is a significant plant pathogen belonging to the genus Potyvirus within the Potyviridae family. The virus is characterized by flexuous filamentous particles and is known for its ability to cause systemic infection in various plant species, disrupting normal physiological processes and reducing plant vigor.

The primary host and reservoir for this virus is the pokeweed plant (Phytolacca), which acts as a permanent source of the pathogen in the environment. From these reservoirs, the virus can spread to various agricultural and horticultural crops, posing a threat to yield and ornamental quality, particularly in temperate and subtropical climates.

The most common symptoms observed on infected plants include:

  • chlorotic mosaic patterns on leaf surfaces;
  • stunting of shoots and leaves;
  • malformation or crinkling of foliage;
  • overall reduction in plant size and decreased fruit yield.

The transmission of the virus primarily occurs via aphid vectors in a non-persistent manner. This means that aphids can acquire the virus after a brief feeding period on an infected plant and immediately transmit it to a healthy one. Additionally, the virus can be spread mechanically through contaminated gardening equipment, such as pruners or knives, when working on healthy plants immediately after handling infected ones.

Management and prevention strategies focus on minimizing the presence of the virus in the vicinity of crops. Effective measures include the removal of reservoir weeds like Phytolacca from garden borders, rigorous control of aphid populations using targeted insecticides, and the practice of strict hygiene for pruning tools. Sanitizing tools with appropriate disinfectants or alcohol helps break the chain of mechanical transmission.
