Description
Pea mosaic virus (Potyvirus pisumsemenportati) is a significant viral pathogen affecting various legume crops worldwide. As a member of the Potyvirus genus, this virus poses a major challenge to agricultural productivity due to its ability to persist in infected seeds and survive in perennial plant hosts during the dormant season.
The host range of this virus primarily includes economically important legumes such as field peas, lentils, vetch, and various bean cultivars. In addition to cultivated crops, several wild legume species serve as reservoir hosts, providing a constant source of the virus that can easily spread into neighboring agricultural fields.
Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as mottled or mosaic patterns on leaves, often accompanied by leaf distortion, vein clearing, and stunting of the entire plant. In severe cases, the viral infection leads to shortened internodes, reduced pod set, and significant shriveling of the seeds, resulting in severe yield losses and degraded grain quality.
The development and dissemination of the virus are primarily driven by aphid vectors, which transmit the pathogen in a non-persistent manner. Environmental conditions that favor aphid population growth, such as warm, humid springs, significantly increase the risk of rapid disease spread across the fields. Mechanical transmission through farm machinery or contact between plants can also contribute to the spread of the pathogen.
