Description
Pathogen and disease type. The Tuberose mosaic virus is a member of the Potyvirus genus. It is a systemic viral pathogen that infects the plant at a cellular level, disrupting normal physiological functions. Because viruses hijack the host plant's replication machinery, the disease is considered incurable once the plant is systemically infected.
Host plants and damage. The primary host for this pathogen is the tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa). The economic impact of this disease is significant, as it degrades the aesthetic and market value of the flowers. Infested plants show stunted growth, produce fewer blossoms, and often fail to produce viable daughter bulbs, leading to declining yields over time.
Symptoms and signs. Typical clinical signs include mosaic patterns, chlorotic mottling on the leaves, and mosaic-like tissue discolorations. Flowers are often distorted, asymmetrical, or have broken color patterns. As the infection progresses, the overall vigor of the tuberose plant diminishes, leaving it more susceptible to secondary environmental stresses.
Development and spread. The virus spreads through mechanical transmission (e.g., pruning tools, bulb handling) and biological vectors. Aphids are the primary insect vectors that transmit the virus while feeding on plant sap. The spread is facilitated by warm conditions and high aphid activity, as well as by improper sanitation practices during harvest or propagation.
Control and prevention. Given that there are no curative measures for infected plants, the focus must remain on strict sanitation and integrated pest management (IPM). Recommended practices are:
- Rouging and immediate destruction of symptomatic plants.
- Rigorous control of aphid populations using targeted insecticides.
- Sterilizing all horticultural tools with alcohol or chlorine bleach.
- Sourcing virus-free planting material from certified propagators.
