Spiranthes virus (Potyvirus spiranthesis) is a plant-pathogenic virus within the genus Potyvirus. It is recognized as a significant threat to various species of orchids, particularly within the Spiranthes genus, causing severe physiological disturbances that hamper the host's ability to develop normally and exhibit its aesthetic characteristics.
The disease is classified as a systemic viral infection, meaning the pathogen moves throughout the entire plant system via the phloem. Once infected, the plant's cellular machinery is hijacked to replicate the viral genome, leading to the inhibition of photosynthesis, depletion of nutrients, and a breakdown of metabolic stability within the leaf and floral tissues.
Symptoms of the infection typically appear as distinctive mosaic patterns, light green or yellow chlorotic spots, and streaking on the foliage. Infected plants often show stunted growth, distorted leaf shapes, and reduced flower longevity. In severe cases, the quality of blossoms is drastically reduced, leading to malformed petals that fail to open correctly.
The spread of this virus is primarily attributed to insect vectors, particularly aphids, which transmit the virus while feeding on plant sap. Additionally, human intervention serves as a major vector for the spread of Potyvirus spiranthesis. Contaminated pruning tools, knives, and shared pots facilitate the mechanical transmission of the virus from infected specimens to healthy ones if sanitation protocols are neglected.
As there is no cure for viral plant infections, management focuses strictly on prevention:

- Strict sanitation protocols for all pruning equipment, involving sterilization between plants.
- Effective pest management programs to control aphid populations in the greenhouse.
- Implementing a quarantine period for all new plant additions to detect potential infections.
- Immediate rogueing and destruction of symptomatic plants to limit the virus's spread in a collection.
