Description
Streptopus mosaic virus (Potyvirus streptopi) is a viral plant pathogen that belongs to the widespread Potyvirus genus. Like other members of this group, it is characterized by filamentous viral particles that infect the vascular system of the host, leading to systemic physiological stress.
The primary hosts of this pathogen are plants of the genus Streptopus and other Liliaceae family members. Due to its systemic nature, the virus spreads through the entire plant organism, including rhizomes, which makes the pathogen particularly dangerous for perennials and decorative crops that are propagated vegetatively.
The disease manifests through distinct foliar symptoms, including light and dark green mosaic patterns, mottling, and sometimes yellowish streaks. Infected plants often show signs of stunted growth, shortened internodes, and a reduced overall vigor, which eventually degrades the plant's aesthetic value in landscapes and gardens.
Transmission occurs predominantly through non-persistent vectors, primarily various aphid species that acquire the virus while feeding on infected tissues. Additionally, mechanical transmission remains a significant pathway; human activity, such as pruning or dividing roots with unsterilized tools, facilitates the rapid spread of the virus within a plant collection.
Management of Potyvirus streptopi relies heavily on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. Since chemical cures are not available for viral diseases, prevention is critical: maintaining strict insect control, ensuring clean propagating material, and practicing rigorous tool hygiene are the most effective ways to mitigate the risk of infection.
