Telosma mosaic virus (Potyvirus telosmae) is a viral pathogen belonging to the Potyvirus genus, known for infecting specific climbing plant species. As an obligate parasite, it relies entirely on its host for replication and causes systemic infections that alter the physiological development of the plant.

The virus primarily affects species within the Telosma genus, particularly Telosma cordata. It is a significant concern for growers of tropical ornamentals, as the infection can spread rapidly in controlled environments such as nurseries and greenhouses where plants are kept in close proximity.

The main symptoms include foliar mosaic patterns, which appear as contrasting light and dark green areas on the leaf blades. In addition to discoloration, plants often exhibit stunted growth, leaf curling, and severe deformation of new shoots. These symptoms are characteristic of potyvirus infections and can lead to a significant decline in flower production.

The virus is primarily transmitted through insect vectors, with aphids (Aphididae) playing the most significant role in moving the pathogen between hosts. Transmission can also occur mechanically, through contaminated pruning tools or contact during routine plant maintenance, which makes sanitary hygiene critical for disease control.

There are no chemical treatments available to cure plants once they are infected by Potyvirus telosmae. Consequently, management strategies focus exclusively on prevention: removing and destroying infected plants, implementing strict pest control to manage aphid populations, and ensuring that all gardening tools are sterilized before and after use. Maintaining high biosecurity standards is the most effective approach to protect collections from this virus.
