Tradescantia potyvirus

Tradescantia potyvirus is a significant plant pathogen belonging to the Potyvirus genus. This virus causes systemic infections in its host plants, characterized by the presence of filamentous, flexuous virions. Once a plant is infected, the virus spreads through the phloem to all tissues, resulting in a lifelong systemic disease.

The primary hosts of this virus are members of the Commelinaceae family, most notably species of Tradescantia and Zebrina. In ornamental horticulture and indoor plant collections, the virus causes major aesthetic damage, reducing the plant's vigor and its suitability for commercial or private display.

Symptomatology typically includes leaf chlorosis, mosaic patterns, and streaks of different colors on the foliage. In advanced stages of infection, plants may exhibit stunted growth, shortened internodes, and leaf distortion, which significantly diminishes the structural integrity and beauty of the plant.

Transmission occurs through two main routes: insect vectors and mechanical transfer. Aphids are the primary biological vectors, transmitting the virus in a non-persistent manner. Mechanical transmission is a significant risk during standard horticultural practices, such as pruning, trimming, or taking cuttings, if tools are shared between infected and healthy plants.
