Clover yellow mosaic virus (CYMV), classified within the Potyviridae family, is a significant viral pathogen affecting various agricultural and forage crops. This virus causes systemic infections that impair the plant's physiological functions, specifically disrupting photosynthesis and carbohydrate metabolism, which ultimately leads to a reduction in both biomass and seed quality.
The host range of CYMV primarily includes members of the Fabaceae family, with clover, alfalfa, and beans being the most economically impacted. The virus can persist within perennial leguminous weeds in the field margins, which serve as a continuous reservoir for the virus, facilitating primary infection each growing season through insect vectors or mechanical contact.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by yellow mosaic patterns, leaf distortion, and mild to severe stunting. In advanced stages of infection, the leaves may exhibit mottling or necrotic lesions.
