Potato tuber potyvirus (Potyvirus vetuberosi) is a viral pathogen belonging to the Potyvirus genus that significantly impacts the health and yield of Solanaceous crops. The virus consists of flexuous rod-shaped particles that spread systemically through the host plant, affecting both foliage and underground tubers.

The primary host for this virus is the potato (Solanum tuberosum). It can infect plants at various growth stages, but the most severe agricultural threat occurs when the virus persists within the seed tubers, leading to long-term degradation of potato lines and reduced vigor in subsequent seasons.

Symptoms of the infection typically include leaf mosaic, chlorosis, and crinkling of the foliage. Infected plants often show stunted development, while the tubers themselves may display abnormalities in shape, skin texture, or internal tissue necrosis, making them unsuitable for storage or fresh market consumption.

The virus is primarily transmitted by aphid species that act as vectors while feeding on infected plant sap. Once introduced into a field, the disease can spread rapidly during the growing season if aphid populations are not managed. Mechanical transmission through contact with contaminated agricultural tools also remains a significant risk factor.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Farmers are advised to prioritize the use of certified virus-free seed potatoes, implement stringent weed control to eliminate alternative hosts, and execute timely insecticide applications to curb vector activity, thereby reducing the rate of secondary viral spread.
