Description
The causative agent of this disease is the Wisteria vein mosaic virus (WVMV), which is a member of the Potyvirus genus. It is a systemic plant disease that disrupts vascular tissues, leading to stunted growth and reduced vigor in ornamental Wisteria specimens.
The primary host for this virus is Wisteria. Because the virus is systemic, it spreads throughout the entire plant, affecting roots, stems, and leaves. Once a plant is infected, it remains a permanent carrier, posing a continuous threat to nearby healthy plants in a landscape or nursery setting.
Common symptoms include vein banding, which appears as pale or yellowish streaks along the leaf veins, creating a mosaic pattern. Infected leaves may also exhibit curling, distortion, and significant size reduction. In severe cases, the plant's flowering capacity is greatly diminished or lost entirely.
Transmission occurs mainly through vectors, particularly aphids, which transmit the virus while feeding on plant sap. Mechanical transmission is another critical pathway, occurring during pruning or grafting when infected sap is transferred to healthy plants via contaminated tools or hands.
