Yam mosaic virus (Potyvirus yamplacidum) is a serious viral pathogen that severely impacts the cultivation of yams (genus Dioscorea). As a member of the Potyviridae family, it spreads effectively across tropical and subtropical regions, causing systemic infections that can lead to major economic losses for farmers.
The virus primarily affects various yam species grown for human consumption. It survives in the environment by persisting in infected tubers, which serve as the primary reservoir for the disease. Planting infected tubers ensures that the virus continues to circulate within the crop population every growing season.
Symptoms of the infection typically include mosaic patterns on the foliage, vein banding, chlorosis, and in some cases, severe leaf distortion or stunting of the entire plant.
