The Wild iris mosaic virus, identified scientifically as Potyvirus yidiuris, is a significant viral pathogen that affects various ornamental plants, specifically within the Iridaceae family. As a member of the Potyvirus genus, this virus utilizes a positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome to invade host cells, disrupting biological processes and reducing the overall vigor of the plant.
The primary host range includes many cultivars of garden irises and their wild relatives. The virus is systemic, meaning that once a plant is infected, the pathogen spreads throughout the vascular system, affecting the rhizomes, foliage, and reproductive structures. This systemic nature makes the control of the virus challenging, as symptomatic parts of the plant are often just an indicator of widespread infection.
Clinical signs of infection typically manifest as distinct mosaic patterns, streaks, and chlorotic patches on the leaves. Infected plants often show stunted growth and reduced blooming capacity.
