Description

Potyvirus zantedeschiae is the viral agent responsible for the mosaic disease in Zantedeschia plants. This plant pathogen belongs to the Potyvirus genus and causes systemic infections that alter the plant's metabolic processes, resulting in reduced vitality and severe damage to ornamental characteristics.

The primary hosts of this virus are calla lilies (Zantedeschia). The virus is particularly problematic in nursery production because it is easily transmitted through infected rhizomes, which serve as a silent reservoir for the pathogen during the storage and planting stages.

Infected plants typically display mosaic patterns, yellowing, and chlorotic streaking on the leaves. As the virus spreads throughout the plant tissues, leaves may show significant distortion or curling. The impact on flowers is equally severe, often causing color breaking (streaking) on the spathes and reducing the total number of blooms produced by the plant.

Transmission occurs through two main routes: insect vectors and mechanical contact. Aphids are known to be the most common vectors, carrying the virus from infected plants to healthy ones during feeding. Furthermore, human activity, such as pruning or dividing tubers with contaminated tools, is a major factor in the rapid spread of the virus within greenhouse environments.

Since there are no curative chemicals available for viral diseases, management focuses on prevention. Growers should implement strict sanitation protocols, such as heat-treating bulbs where applicable, and maintaining a high level of hygiene by disinfecting cutting tools between plants. Consistent insect control and the removal of symptomatic plants are critical to keeping the spread of Potyvirus zantedeschiae under control.
