Pathogen and disease type. The causative agent is the Zantedeschia mosaic virus (ZMV), a member of the Potyvirus genus. As a systemic plant pathogen, it invades the plant cells, disrupting normal physiological functions and causing significant structural changes. It is a highly persistent virus that can survive within host plant tissues throughout their lifecycle.
Host plants. The primary host for this pathogen is Zantedeschia species, commonly known as calla lilies. It frequently attacks commercial crops grown for cut flowers or ornamental pots. Once the rhizomes are infected, the virus becomes a long-term problem, as it is easily propagated through the division of infected plant materials.
Symptoms and signs. Typical clinical signs include mosaic patterns, mottling, or chlorotic streaks on the leaves. Control and prevention measures. There are no chemical cures for ZMV, making strict biosecurity and management practices essential for prevention. Recommendations include:
