Description

Pathogen and disease type. Potyvirus zeatessellati is a viral pathogen known to infect cereal crops. As a member of the Potyvirus genus, it consists of flexuous rod-shaped particles containing positive-sense single-stranded RNA. It induces systemic infection, spreading through the phloem of the plant and interfering with physiological growth processes.

Host range. The primary agricultural host for this virus is maize (Zea mays). The virus has a specific ecological niche, often persisting in wild grass species throughout the year. These wild reservoirs are crucial for the virus's survival during winter and act as the starting point for outbreaks during the spring and summer months.

Symptoms and signs. Typical symptoms include a mosaic pattern on the leaf blades, characterized by light and dark green mottled areas. Infected plants often show stunted growth, reduced internode length, and chlorosis. Transmission is non-persistent, meaning that aphids can acquire the virus after a very short feeding period on an infected plant and immediately transmit it to healthy crops.
