Description

Proteobacteria represent a diverse phylum of Gram-negative bacteria, which includes several of the most destructive phytopathogens in agriculture. These bacteria, including genera like Xanthomonas, Pseudomonas, and Ralstonia, are responsible for widespread epidemics in various crops, leading to significant economic losses globally.

These pathogens affect a wide range of host plants, including staple crops such as potatoes, tomatoes, beans, and fruit trees. The diseases caused by these bacteria typically target the vascular system or soft tissues, resulting in conditions often referred to as bacterial wilt, soft rot, or leaf spot diseases, depending on the specific bacterial strain and host plant interaction.

Key symptoms include the sudden wilting of leaves, chlorosis, and the development of water-soaked spots that later turn into necrosis. In many cases, cutting the stem of an infected plant reveals discolored vascular bundles and the presence of bacterial ooze. Soft rot pathogens specifically cause rapid tissue degradation, turning plant parts into a pulpy, foul-smelling mass.

The spread and development of these diseases are heavily influenced by environmental factors such as high humidity, heavy rainfall, and moderate to high temperatures. Pathogens are disseminated through infested seeds, contaminated soil, irrigation systems, and insect vectors. Wounds on plant surfaces, often caused by cultural practices or insect feeding, serve as primary entry points for the bacteria.
