Proteus vulgaris is a gram-negative, facultative anaerobic bacterium primarily recognized as a secondary opportunist in the context of plant pathology. While frequently associated with human and animal microbiology, in agricultural systems, it acts as a significant agent of plant tissue decay, often exacerbating damage caused by primary pathogens.
This bacterium affects a variety of high-moisture crops, including tubers, root vegetables, and leafy greens. Vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, onions, and various brassicas are particularly vulnerable. The bacteria typically gain entry into the plant tissues through wounds, bruises, or cracks created during harvesting, handling, or pest infestation.
The primary manifestation of Proteus vulgaris infection is soft rot. The affected plant tissue rapidly loses integrity, turning into a watery, mushy consistency. A hallmark of this infection is the emission of a strong, offensive odor, resulting from the anaerobic breakdown of organic compounds within the host plant.
Conditions that favor the development of this pathogen include high humidity, poor aeration, and moderate to high temperatures. Unlike some specialized pathogens, Proteus vulgaris thrives in environments where water film persists on the surface of produce, facilitating rapid colonization and systemic degradation of the plant material.
