Description
Downy mildew of radish, caused by the oomycete pathogen Peronospora brassicae, is a significant fungal-like disease affecting members of the Brassicaceae family. It is a common challenge in greenhouse and field-grown radish production, particularly in regions with temperate climates.
The pathogen specifically targets radish, daikon, and other cruciferous vegetables. It attacks the foliage of the plant, which hinders the plant's ability to produce energy, ultimately impacting the development and overall quality of the root crop.
The first symptoms are typically observed as pale yellow or chlorotic angular spots on the upper leaf surface. Under humid conditions, a characteristic grey or purple-tinged fuzzy growth develops on the underside of the leaves. As the disease progresses, these lesions merge, turning brown and eventually leading to tissue necrosis and leaf death.
The development of downy mildew is highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically cool to moderate temperatures and high relative humidity. Prolonged leaf wetness caused by fog, rain, or improper irrigation facilitates the rapid dispersal of sporangia via wind, splashing water, and mechanical handling.
The economic impact of the disease is considerable, as it leads to severe yield losses and degraded vegetable quality. Effective control strategies involve an integrated approach: selecting resistant varieties, maintaining optimal plant spacing to ensure air circulation, removing infected plant debris, and applying systemic or contact fungicides during favorable weather for the fungus.
