Raspberry latent virus is a plant pathogen that typically causes a symptomless or latent infection in various Rubus species. Because the symptoms are often masked or non-existent under optimal growing conditions, this virus can persist undetected in orchards for extended periods, silently affecting the health and vigor of the plantations.

The primary hosts for this virus are raspberries and blackberries. The pathogen spreads through the vascular system of the plant, specifically targeting the phloem. By interfering with the translocation of sugars and nutrients, the virus weakens the plant's overall physiology, making it more susceptible to environmental stressors and other biotic infections.

Symptoms are rarely pronounced but may include mild leaf chlorosis, faint spotting, or slight leaf distortion during periods of high physiological stress, such as extreme heat or drought. In most cases, the presence of the virus is confirmed only through advanced diagnostic testing, such as PCR, because visual inspection often fails to identify infected plants.

Transmission occurs primarily through insect vectors, specifically aphids, which acquire the virus while feeding on infected plant sap. Furthermore, human activity, such as propagating nursery stock from infected mother plants, is a major factor in the widespread distribution of the virus. If infected material is used, the entire new planting will harbor the virus from the beginning.

Management includes the strict use of virus-indexed, certified nursery stock, rigorous monitoring and control of aphid populations using systemic insecticides, and the immediate rogueing of any plants suspected of harboring the infection.
