Description

The Reoviridae family comprises a group of segmented double-stranded RNA viruses that act as significant pathogens in various agricultural crops. In the field of plant pathology, these viruses are recognized for causing severe stunting and metabolic disruption, often leading to total yield failure in affected areas.

Major crops affected by these pathogens include rice, maize, and various cereal grasses. Once introduced into the plant tissue, the virus replicates systemically, disrupting the host's normal physiology, inhibiting nutrient transport, and significantly reducing the plant's capacity for proper grain filling and development.

Symptoms of infection are distinct and often debilitating; they include severe dwarfing, leaf chlorosis, and the development of necrotic streaks or mosaic patterns. Plants infected at an early stage of development often fail to reach maturity, resulting in barren inflorescences and grain yields that are commercially worthless.

The spread of Reoviridae is inextricably linked to insect vectors, particularly leafhoppers, which transmit the virus in a persistent manner. After acquiring the virus through sap feeding, the insect remains infectious for its entire life cycle. Environmental conditions such as warm, humid weather favor the rapid expansion of vector populations and, consequently, the spread of the disease.

Economic damage is substantial, with outbreaks capable of devastating significant percentages of harvest. Prevention strategies focus on an integrated pest management (IPM) approach: monitoring leafhopper activity, applying insecticides to break the cycle of transmission, managing weed reservoirs, and prioritizing the cultivation of resistant plant varieties.
