Description
Rice dwarf is a severe viral disease caused by the Rice dwarf virus (RDV), a member of the Phytoreovirus genus. The virus causes systemic infection, disrupting normal cellular functions and plant development, which leads to significant yield losses in affected paddy fields.
The primary host for this pathogen is cultivated rice (Oryza sativa). However, the virus can also persist in various weed species that belong to the Poaceae family, which serve as alternative hosts for both the virus and its insect vectors during off-seasons.
Symptoms typically manifest as severe stunting of the rice plants. Infected leaves show pale yellow or whitish chlorotic spots, which are often arranged in distinct rows parallel to the leaf veins. The tillering is excessive but abnormal, and affected plants often fail to produce panicles or produce only sterile, malformed ones.
The transmission of the virus is carried out by leafhoppers, most notably Nephotettix cincticeps. The virus is transmitted in a persistent, circulative, and propagative manner. Once a leafhopper acquires the virus, it remains infective for its entire lifespan and can transmit the virus to its progeny through its eggs.
Management of rice dwarf requires an integrated approach. The most effective strategy is the use of resistant rice cultivars developed through breeding programs. Chemical control targeting the leafhopper population is essential during the early stages of crop growth, alongside cultural practices like weed management to remove potential virus reservoirs.
