Rice orange leaf is a viral disease caused by the Rice orange leaf virus (ROLV), which poses a significant threat to rice production. This disease is categorized as a systemic viral infection, characterized by its ability to spread rapidly throughout the vascular tissues of the rice plant, leading to stunted growth and reduced yields.

The primary host for this pathogen is cultivated rice (Oryza sativa). The virus disrupts the photosynthetic capacity of the plants, as the yellowing and orange discoloration of the leaves signify the degradation of chlorophyll and interference with normal physiological functions during critical growth stages.

Symptoms typically manifest as small, scattered orange or yellowish spots on the leaves, which gradually coalesce. As the disease progresses, the entire leaf blade may turn orange, followed by leaf necrosis. The infected plants often exhibit stunted development, reduced tillering, and failure to produce healthy grain-bearing panicles.
