Rubodvirus is a genus of plant viruses belonging to the Betaflexiviridae family. As a viral pathogen, it operates as an obligate parasite, hijacking the plant's cellular machinery to replicate its single-stranded RNA. These viruses typically cause systemic infections that can disrupt the plant's physiological functions, leading to long-term decline in health and productivity.

The primary hosts for Rubodvirus are plants within the Rosaceae family, with Rubus species such as blackberries and raspberries being the most common targets. The virus is capable of persisting in the host tissues for many years, which often leads to the degradation of the plant's immune system and increased vulnerability to other opportunistic pathogens or environmental stressors.

Common symptoms of Rubodvirus infection include chlorotic mosaic patterns on the leaves, leaf deformation, stunted shoot growth, and a reduction in fruit size. Infected plants often exhibit a generalized appearance of weakness, with shorter internodes and reduced vigor, which significantly impairs their ability to withstand winter frosts or drought conditions.

The transmission and development of the virus are facilitated by contaminated planting material and potential insect or nematode vectors that spread the pathogen from diseased to healthy plants. Inadequate sanitation in nurseries and the lack of regular scouting in commercial orchards create favorable conditions for the rapid spread of the virus within a production area.

Controlling Rubodvirus is a significant challenge because there are no curative chemical treatments for plant viruses once they have systemic control of the host. Therefore, management relies entirely on strict preventive measures: using exclusively virus-indexed propagation material, implementing robust pest control programs to manage potential vectors, and immediate roguing of any plants displaying signs of systemic viral infection.
