Apple stem pitting, caused by the virus Rubodvirus mali, is a significant viral disease affecting pome fruit trees, particularly apples. This pathogen is known for its ability to persist in the host for years without causing obvious leaf symptoms, making it a "silent" threat that can quietly compromise the health and productivity of an entire orchard.

The primary host for this virus is the apple tree (Malus domestica). The virus interferes with the tree's physiological processes by damaging the cambium and the conducting tissues. Infected trees often exhibit stunted growth and decreased vigor, which eventually leads to a decline in fruit quality and yield, creating economic losses for fruit growers.

The main diagnostic feature is found beneath the bark. When the bark is removed, the wood surface displays distinct pits, grooves, and depressions. In severe cases, the stem may become so deformed that the structural integrity of the branch is compromised, making it prone to breakage during high winds or heavy fruit loads.

Transmission occurs almost exclusively through human activities. Grafting with infected scion wood is the most common path of spread. Furthermore, mechanical transmission via contaminated pruning tools can lead to localized outbreaks if sanitization protocols are not strictly followed. There is currently no evidence of significant insect vector transmission for this specific virus.

Control of apple stem pitting relies entirely on exclusion and sanitation, as there are no curative treatments. Growers should implement the following best practices:

  • Use certified virus-free grafting material and nursery stock.
  • Implement strict sanitation protocols, ensuring all pruning tools are disinfected with alcohol or bleach solutions between trees.
  • Conduct routine orchard inspections and rogue out symptomatic trees to prevent the spread of the virus.
  • Maintain long-term documentation of rootstock-scion compatibility, as certain combinations are more susceptible to virus-induced decline.
