Description

Rymoviruses constitute a genus of plant viruses within the Potyviridae family. These pathogens are characterized by their filamentous particles and their specific transmission mechanism involving eriophyid mites. As obligate parasites, they infect the vascular system of the host, leading to systemic disruption of essential biological processes within the plant.

These viruses primarily impact graminaceous crops, specifically wheat, barley, rye, and various forage grasses. Economically, they are significant because they reduce both the quality and quantity of harvested grain. The ability of the virus to persist in wild grass hosts makes them difficult to eradicate completely from an agricultural landscape.

The characteristic symptoms of Rymovirus infection involve yellow or chlorotic streaks on the leaves, often arranged in parallel patterns along the veins. In severe cases, the plants exhibit stunted growth, excessive yellowing, and leaf rolling. The reproduction of the plant is also affected, resulting in smaller spikes, reduced grain weight, and sometimes complete sterility of the infected stalks.

The development and spread of the virus depend heavily on environmental conditions and the presence of vector populations. High humidity and mild temperatures favor the activity of eriophyid mites. Since the virus cannot survive for long periods outside the host or vector, the survival of both in volunteer crops and perennial grasses during the inter-crop period is essential for the disease cycle.
