Description

Ryegrass mosaic virus (Rymovirus lolii) is a plant pathogenic virus belonging to the genus Rymovirus within the Potyviridae family. This virus is a significant concern in agriculture, particularly for producers of forage grasses, as it causes systemic infection that disrupts the physiological functions of the plant.

The virus primarily affects various species within the Lolium genus, most notably perennial ryegrass and Italian ryegrass. Beyond commercial forage crops, it also infects several wild grass species, which act as reservoirs and ensure the survival of the virus during periods when preferred host crops are not actively growing.

Typical symptoms of infection include the development of a mosaic pattern on the leaf blades, characterized by light green to yellow streaks, mottling, or intermittent stripes. Severe infestations lead to stunted plant growth, a reduction in the number of tillers, and overall reduced biomass production, negatively impacting yield and grazing quality.

The transmission of the virus is largely facilitated by eriophyid mites (specifically Abacarus hystrix), which act as biological vectors. The mites acquire the virus from infected tissues and transmit it to healthy grasses during feeding. Spread can also occur mechanically, although transmission by mites is the primary route for field-level dissemination.

Management and prevention focus heavily on integrated pest management practices. Key strategies include planting certified virus-free seed, implementing crop rotation to break the cycle of infection, and managing grass density to discourage mite proliferation. Currently, there are no direct chemical curative treatments for the virus, emphasizing the importance of preventative agronomic practices.
