Description
Sadwavirus is a genus of plant-pathogenic viruses belonging to the family Secoviridae. These viruses possess a positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome and are known for causing systemic infections in a wide range of host plants, which can lead to significant economic losses in the horticultural sector.
The virus primarily affects various members of the Cucurbitaceae family, including cucumbers, melons, squashes, and pumpkins. In addition to commercial vegetable crops, various weeds and wild plants can serve as alternative hosts, acting as reservoirs for the virus and facilitating its persistence from one season to the next.
Symptoms of Sadwavirus infection often include distinct mosaic patterns, chlorotic spotting, leaf crinkling, and general stunting of the plant. Infected plants frequently display reduced internode length and overall lack of vigor, which directly correlates with a reduced fruit yield and poorer fruit quality.
Transmission of the virus occurs via infected seeds, mechanical sap transmission during field operations such as pruning or training, and potentially through certain insect vectors. Because the virus is highly stable, it can easily spread through contaminated equipment or contact between foliage during high-density planting conditions.
Control measures are primarily preventive. It is essential to use certified disease-free seeds and maintain high sanitation standards in greenhouses and fields. Managing weed populations and controlling potential insect vectors are crucial steps to minimize the spread of the virus throughout the growing season.
