Sadwavirus citri

Sadwavirus citri is a viral plant pathogen belonging to the Secoviridae family. It is a highly systemic disease that colonizes the vascular tissues of host plants, disrupting nutrient transportation and photosynthesis. Once infected, a citrus tree becomes a persistent reservoir for the virus, as there is currently no curative chemical treatment for viral plant infections.

The primary hosts of this virus are citrus species, including lemon and orange trees. The virus impacts the plant’s physiology, leading to systemic stress that manifests as weakened immunity and extreme susceptibility to secondary infections. It is a major concern for commercial citrus nurseries and orchards globally.

Symptoms of Sadwavirus citri typically include the development of chlorotic rings, spots, and necrotic lines on the foliage. Infected trees often exhibit stunted growth and significant distortions in leaf shape. Fruit quality suffers greatly, with affected fruits becoming undersized, misshapen, and significantly reduced in juice content, rendering them unmarketable.

Transmission of the pathogen occurs primarily through human activity, such as grafting with infected buds or using contaminated pruning tools. Additionally, insect vectors, such as aphids or leafhoppers, can spread the virus from infected to healthy trees while feeding. Rapid environmental spread is common in regions with poor sanitation and high pest activity.

The economic impact of this disease is severe, as it leads to progressive decline and eventual death of the affected trees. The loss of yield and quality forces growers to remove entire tree sections to prevent further spread. Because the virus can remain asymptomatic for long periods, early detection and strict hygiene are the only viable management strategies.
