Description

The causative agent of this disease is Sadwavirus fragariae, a systemic plant virus that severely affects the development of strawberry plants. It compromises the plant's vascular integrity, leading to metabolic imbalance and a drastic decline in plant vigor and overall yield potential.

The primary host for this pathogen is the cultivated strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa). However, the virus can also persist in various wild plant species, which act as reservoirs for the infection, making it difficult to completely eliminate the virus from the vicinity of commercial fields.

Symptoms typically present as chlorotic rings, lines, or mosaic patterns on the foliage. Infected plants often exhibit stunted growth, leaf deformation, and reduced runner production. In severe cases, the entire plant may show systemic necrosis, rendering it unable to produce marketable fruit.

The transmission of the virus is primarily mediated by soil-borne nematodes belonging to the genus Xiphinema. These vectors acquire the virus while feeding on the roots of infected plants and subsequently transmit it to healthy roots, leading to the characteristic patchy distribution of diseased plants in the field.

  • Use only certified, virus-free nursery stock for new plantings.
  • Perform soil testing for nematode populations before planting strawberries.
  • Implement strict weed control to remove potential alternative virus hosts.
  • Rotate strawberry crops with non-host species to reduce nematode pressure.
  • Rogue out and destroy infected plants immediately upon symptom detection.
