Description
Sclerodarnavirus is a genus of viruses that infects fungi, specifically within the family Sclerodarnaviridae. Unlike typical plant viruses, these are classified as mycoviruses, as their primary host is the fungus Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, which is responsible for severe crop losses due to white mold disease.
The core significance of Sclerodarnavirus in agriculture lies in its potential to act as a biocontrol agent. By infecting the fungal pathogen, the virus can reduce the fungus's growth rate and its ability to produce sclerotia, which are the resting structures that ensure the survival of the disease in the soil from one season to the next.
Symptoms of the infection in the fungus include altered pigmentation, reduced hyphal branching, and decreased production of oxalic acid—a chemical essential for the fungus to penetrate plant tissues. These changes effectively lower the virulence of the disease, providing a natural buffer against severe outbreaks in the field.
Environmental conditions that favor the spread of the fungal host also favor the transmission of the virus. The transmission happens mainly through the fusion of infected and healthy hyphae. Because the virus is dependent on the fungal host, its success in the field is dictated by the density and activity of the Sclerotinia population within the soil profile.
Strategies to manage fields affected by Sclerotinia (and associated mycoviruses) focus on long-term prevention:
- Implementing diverse crop rotation cycles to starve the pathogen.
- Improving field drainage to reduce the humidity levels preferred by fungi.
- Timely application of chemical fungicides during the flowering period of susceptible crops.
- Deep plowing to bury infested plant debris and sclerotia.
