Description
Sequivirus is a genus of plant viruses within the Secoviridae family. These pathogens are recognized as significant agricultural threats, responsible for systemic infections that can lead to crop failure in various vegetable and field crop species if not managed correctly.
The causal agent is a virus containing single-stranded RNA. It is categorized as a systemic plant disease. Once introduced into the host tissue, the virus spreads through the vascular system, effectively hijacking the plant's metabolic processes and suppressing its ability to grow and produce fruit normally.
Host crops typically include various vegetables and specific ornamental plants. The virus is particularly damaging during the early vegetative stages, as it targets developing tissues, which leads to stunted growth and structural anomalies that are often irreversible once the plant is fully infected.
Common symptoms of infection include:
- distinct mosaic patterns on leaves;
- leaf curling, distortion, and blistering;
- stunting and significant reduction in overall plant vigor;
- chlorotic stripes or spotting on stems and foliage;
- reduced yield and poor quality of harvested produce.
The environmental conditions that favor the development of this disease are directly linked to the activity of insect vectors, such as aphids. Favorable warm and humid conditions promote the reproduction of these insects, increasing the rate of transmission throughout the field from primary infection sources.
The economic impact of the disease is severe due to total yield losses and decreased marketability. Because viruses cannot be treated with chemical fungicides, infected plants serve as a source of further spread, requiring immediate removal from the field to protect the remaining crop stands.
Management and prevention focus on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. This includes planting certified virus-free seeds, eliminating weeds that serve as alternate hosts, practicing proper field sanitation, and executing well-timed insecticide applications to control vector populations before they transmit the virus.
