Parsnip yellow fleck virus (Sequivirus pastinacae) is a viral pathogen that specifically affects members of the Apiaceae (Umbelliferae) plant family. This virus is characterized by its ability to significantly disrupt the physiological functions of host plants, leading to noticeable yield losses in commercial production.
The primary hosts for this virus are parsnips and, to a lesser extent, carrots. The virus is transmitted primarily by aphids, which act as vectors. When an aphid feeds on an infected plant, it acquires the virus and subsequently spreads it to healthy plants during further feeding cycles, making aphid management crucial in preventing outbreaks.
Visible symptoms of the infection often include systemic chlorosis, manifesting as yellowing or flecking of the foliage. Infected plants may exhibit stunted growth, leaf curling, or puckering. These symptoms reduce the overall vitality of the crop, negatively impacting the development of the root systems and the sugar content of the harvested parsnips.
