Setaria streak is a viral plant disease caused by the Setaria streak virus (SStV), which is a member of the Geminiviridae family. The virus consists of single-stranded DNA and acts as a systemic pathogen that invades the vascular tissues of the host, leading to significant metabolic disturbances and impairment of plant development.

The primary host range of this virus includes various cereal crops, most notably millet (Setaria italica) and maize. In addition to agricultural crops, several wild grass species act as essential reservoirs for the virus, allowing it to survive and persist in the environment even in the absence of primary crop hosts.

The diagnostic symptoms of the disease appear as distinctive chlorotic streaks or stripes running parallel to the leaf veins. These streaks are often pale yellow or whitish. As the infection progresses, the leaves may become stunted, curled, or necrotic, leading to a visible reduction in the plant's photosynthetic area and overall vigor.

The transmission of Setaria streak is exclusively mediated by insect vectors, primarily leafhoppers. The insect acquires the virus while feeding on infected sap and transmits it to healthy plants during subsequent feedings. The spread of the disease is highly dependent on environmental factors such as temperature, which influences the population dynamics and migration patterns of the vectors.

The economic impact of Setaria streak is reflected in reduced grain yields and poor quality of harvested products. Infected plants often produce fewer seeds or fail to reach maturity. To mitigate these risks, farmers should focus on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, which include the use of virus-free seeds, weed control to eliminate reservoir hosts, and the application of insecticides to manage vector populations.
