Bean southern mosaic virus (Sobemovirus bssv) is a significant viral pathogen affecting various legume species, primarily soybeans. Being a member of the Sobemovirus genus, this virus disrupts the host's vascular system and metabolic functions, leading to reduced photosynthetic capacity and significant agricultural economic losses worldwide.
The virus primarily affects soybean crops, but its host range also includes common beans and several wild legume species. These weeds serve as critical inoculum sources, facilitating the survival and spread of the virus throughout the growing season even when primary crops are not present.
Symptomatology involves severe mosaic patterns on leaves, characterized by light and dark green mottled patches. Infected plants often exhibit stunted growth, leaf deformation, and reduced pod development. The severity of the symptoms can vary depending on the plant growth stage at the time of infection and the environmental conditions.
