The Iris yellow mosaic virus, taxonomically categorized within the genus Sobemovirus, is a significant pathogen affecting various species of irises. This virus causes systemic infection, meaning that once the virus enters the plant, it translocates through the vascular tissues, affecting the overall physiological development and vigor of the ornamental crop.
The primary transmission vectors for this virus are aphid species, which acquire and transmit the virus while feeding on infected plant sap. Furthermore, mechanical transmission is a major concern in nursery and garden settings. This occurs when sap from an infected plant is transferred to a healthy one via contaminated pruning tools, division knives, or other cultivation equipment that has not been properly sterilized.
