The causative agent of the disease is the Lucerne transient streak virus (LTSV), a member of the Sobemovirus genus. This virus is characterized by a small, spherical structure and a positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome, which allows it to replicate efficiently within the host plant cells.

The primary host for this pathogen is alfalfa (Medicago sativa), a crucial forage crop worldwide. While the virus shows high specificity to alfalfa, it can occasionally affect other leguminous species, which significantly impacts the yield and quality of fodder produced in infected fields.

Clinical signs of the infection include transient chlorotic streaking and yellowing of the leaves. These symptoms are notoriously unstable, often fading when environmental conditions become unfavorable for the virus or when the plant enters a specific physiological stage, making field diagnostics particularly challenging.

The virus is disseminated primarily through mechanical transmission and insect vectors. In alfalfa fields, the cutting machinery serves as a major vehicle for spreading the virus from plant to plant. Once introduced into a field, the infection can persist in the perennial root systems, causing cumulative damage over several seasons.

Management strategies focus on minimizing mechanical transmission and vector control. It is recommended to perform harvesting on healthier fields first, sanitize machinery between cuts, and implement rigorous weed control measures to eliminate potential alternative hosts. Early detection and roguing of symptomatic patches remain essential to mitigate the spread.
