Rice yellow mottle virus (RYMV) is a significant plant pathogen classified within the genus Sobemovirus. This virus is known for its high capacity to cause severe yield losses in rice crops globally. Understanding its biology is essential for maintaining food security in regions where rice is the primary staple crop.
The primary host for this virus is cultivated rice (Oryza sativa). However, various wild grass species also act as host plants. These wild grasses serve as an environmental reservoir for the virus, ensuring its survival during the off-season and allowing for rapid infection of newly sown fields.
Typical symptoms of infection include characteristic yellow or orange mottling on the leaves, which often progresses to necrosis. Infected plants exhibit stunted growth, reduced tillering, and distorted panicle formation. Grain filling is often incomplete, leading to the development of empty or sterile florets, significantly reducing final yields.
The transmission of the virus is highly efficient and occurs primarily through insect vectors, specifically beetles and grasshoppers. Additionally, the virus can spread mechanically through contact between healthy and infected plants, human activity, or shared irrigation water containing viral particles from decomposing plant tissue.
Managing RYMV requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. The most effective strategy is the use of resistant rice cultivars. Control measures also include the elimination of wild grass reservoirs, early monitoring of insect vector populations, planting time optimization to avoid peak vector activity, and rigorous sanitation of farming equipment to prevent mechanical spread.
