Description

The causative agent of the disease is the Soybean crinkle mottle virus (SCMoV), which is a member of the Sobemovirus genus. This virus possesses a small RNA genome and acts as a systemic pathogen that disrupts the physiological integrity of host plants, leading to severe yield losses in leguminous crops.

The primary host for this pathogen is soybean (Glycine max). The virus has the potential to cause significant outbreaks in fields where susceptible varieties are grown. One of the most dangerous aspects of this virus is its ability to be seed-borne, allowing the pathogen to persist from one season to the next via infected grain.

Typical symptoms of infection include crinkling and mottling of leaves, interveinal chlorosis, and stunted plant development. As the infection progresses, the leaves may become severely distorted. These symptoms are characteristic of systemic viral diseases and often lead to reduced photosynthesis and biomass production.

The dissemination of the virus is largely facilitated by insect vectors, which transmit the pathogen while feeding on plant sap.
