Description

Solendovirus is a genus of plant viruses belonging to the Virgaviridae family. These pathogens are known for causing systemic infections in a wide range of host plants, predominantly within the Solanaceae family. As obligate parasites, they rely on host plant cells to replicate, severely disrupting the normal biological functions of the plant, which leads to stunted development and significant agricultural losses.

Key crops susceptible to Solendovirus include tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and potatoes. Furthermore, the virus can infect various wild weed species, which often serve as reservoirs for the pathogen during the off-season. This broad host range makes Solendovirus a persistent threat, as it can easily migrate from wild weeds into cultivated areas, spreading rapidly under favorable environmental conditions.

Clinical signs of Solendovirus infection include characteristic mosaic patterns on leaves, where light and dark green areas alternate. Infected plants often show leaf curling, malformation, and reduced internode length, resulting in a stunted appearance. The fruits produced by infected plants are frequently undersized, deformed, or display necrotic spots, making the crop commercially unviable.

The spread of Solendovirus is heavily influenced by climate conditions, with high humidity and warm temperatures favoring both the virus and its insect vectors. Aphids and whiteflies are the primary transmission agents, moving the virus between plants during feeding. Additionally, mechanical transmission occurs through contaminated gardening tools, hands, or direct contact between infected and healthy tissues during cultural practices.

  • Implementing rigorous weed control to eliminate virus reservoirs.
