Soymovirus maculaglycinis, historically identified as Soybean mosaic virus (SMV), is a widespread viral pathogen that infects soybean plants worldwide. This virus belongs to the Potyviridae family and is capable of causing significant physiological stress, affecting the plant's metabolic functions and overall health.

The primary host for this virus is the soybean crop (Glycine max). While it is highly specialized for soybeans, some related viral strains may affect other leguminous species, which act as alternative hosts that maintain the virus in the environment between growing seasons, making eradication difficult.

Symptoms often manifest as a distinct mosaic pattern on leaves, characterized by alternating light and dark green areas. Infected plants may exhibit stunted growth, leaf curling, and severe distortion. A critical diagnostic feature is the discoloration of seeds; specifically, the seed coat often shows mottling or staining around the hilum, which reduces the commercial grade of the crop.

Transmission of the virus occurs via two main pathways: seed transmission and insect vectors. Aphids play a major role as they transmit the virus in a non-persistent manner while feeding on plant sap. Environmental factors that promote high aphid populations, such as moderate temperatures and low precipitation, significantly increase the risk of rapid disease spread across fields.

Economic damage is substantial, as infected plants yield fewer pods and lighter seeds. Effective management strategies involve a combination of biological and agronomic approaches:

  • Planting certified virus-free seed stocks.
  • Utilizing genetically resistant or tolerant soybean cultivars.
  • Implementing insecticide programs to control aphid vector populations.
