Blueberry blotch virus (Soymovirus maculavaccinii) is a viral pathogen classified within the genus Soymovirus. It is a significant disease affecting Vaccinium species, primarily cultivated highbush blueberry crops, which can lead to severe economic losses in fruit production.

This disease is categorized as a systemic viral infection. Once the virus enters the plant, it travels through the vascular system, interfering with metabolic pathways and depriving the plant of the essential nutrients required for healthy growth and fruit development.

Common symptoms include chlorotic spots on the leaves, mosaic patterns, and foliar distortion. As the infection progresses, affected bushes exhibit stunted growth and shortened internodes, often resulting in a sparse canopy and reduced photosynthetic capacity, which drastically lowers overall crop yield.

Transmission occurs primarily through vegetative propagation using infected stock or by insect vectors. Pests such as aphids and leafhoppers act as carriers, acquiring the virus during feeding and subsequently transmitting it to healthy plants, making the containment of vector populations a top priority.

Currently, there is no chemical cure for viral infections in blueberries, making preventive strategy the only effective approach.
