Description

Sugarcane dwarf is a significant systemic plant disease primarily caused by phytoplasmas that colonize the phloem tissues of the host. This infection disrupts the transport of nutrients and photosynthates, causing severe physiological stress and stunted development in the sugarcane crop, which ultimately leads to substantial yield losses.

The primary host for this pathogen is the sugarcane plant (Saccharum officinarum), but various wild grass species can also act as reservoirs. These reservoirs allow the disease to persist in the environment even after the main crop is harvested, posing a continuous threat to subsequent planting cycles.

The characteristic symptoms of the disease include severe stunting, where plants appear significantly shorter than healthy ones. Additionally, internodes become compressed, leaves often show chlorosis or yellowing, and the plants may exhibit an abnormally tufted or bushy appearance, reflecting a failure in normal apical dominance and stem elongation.

The disease is mainly disseminated through the use of infected stalks for vegetative propagation and by insect vectors, particularly leafhoppers (Cicadellidae), which acquire and transmit the pathogen while feeding. High humidity and warm temperatures facilitate the breeding of these vectors, leading to rapid spread of the disease within and between sugarcane fields.

The economic impact is severe due to reduced biomass and lower sugar content. Effective management relies on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, including the use of certified disease-free planting material, rigorous roguing of symptomatic plants, control of insect vector populations, and implementing strict quarantine protocols to prevent the introduction of infected material into new areas.
