Description
Tea phloem necrosis is a significant viral disease affecting the tea plant (Camellia sinensis). The pathogen targets the phloem tissue, which is the primary system for transporting nutrients, causing systemic disruption that leads to the decline of the plant's health.
The primary host for this disease is the tea bush. It is widely recognized as a major issue in tea-growing regions, where it impacts both the total yield and the biochemical composition of the leaves, directly affecting the quality of the harvested tea.
Symptoms of the infection typically begin with chlorosis and the development of localized necrosis on the foliage. Over time, these patches enlarge, leading to leaf distortion, premature leaf drop, and stunted growth of new shoots, eventually resulting in the dieback of entire branches.
The development and spread of the disease are primarily driven by insect vectors, such as aphids and leafhoppers, which transmit the virus while feeding on the phloem sap. Environmental conditions that support large populations of these vectors, such as warm, humid weather, significantly increase the rate of disease transmission within plantations.
Management of tea phloem necrosis focuses on strict phytosanitary measures, as there is no direct cure once a plant is infected. Strategies include the early detection and removal of symptomatic plants to reduce the inoculum load, rigorous vector control programs using selective insecticides, and the implementation of resistant cultivars within breeding programs to ensure long-term sustainability.
