Description
Tenuivirus is a genus of plant viruses that cause systemic diseases in various agricultural crops, with a particular affinity for monocotyledonous plants. As a viral disease type, it significantly impairs the host's metabolic functions, leading to severe disruptions in plant development that cannot be treated with fungicides or bactericides.
The primary host for Tenuivirus is rice, but the virus is also known to infect other important cereals such as maize, oats, and various wild grasses. These wild hosts play a critical role in the disease cycle by maintaining viral reservoirs in the fields even when the primary crop is not present.
Symptoms of infection are distinct and include the appearance of chlorotic stripes or mottling on the foliage. Infected plants exhibit stunted growth, reduced tillering, and severe deformities. In many cases, the plants fail to produce healthy grains, and in severe infestations, the yield loss can reach total crop failure within the affected areas.
The transmission of Tenuivirus is exclusively mediated by insect vectors, primarily delphacid planthoppers like Laodelphax striatellus. The virus exhibits a persistent, circulative-propagative mode of transmission, meaning the vector remains infectious for the rest of its life and can even pass the virus to its offspring through the eggs, ensuring long-term viral persistence in the environment.
Management and prevention focus on an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. This involves planting resistant cultivars, which is the most effective defense, and implementing strict weed control measures to eliminate alternate hosts. Additionally, applying insecticides at the early growth stages to reduce the population of planthoppers is essential to prevent the initial spread of the virus throughout the field.
